The Role
The Senior Medical Director is a system-wide leadership role reporting to the Chief Medical Officer of Community-Based Care with overall accountability for the Women and Newborns Clinical Program. The Senior Medical Director operates in a dyad/triad leadership structure and is responsible for leading the strategic direction, continuous improvement, and performance of the Clinical Program across all fundamentals of extraordinary care, including safety, quality, access, stewardship, patient experience, caregiver engagement, and smart growth. The Senior Medical Director works collaboratively with senior leaders across Intermountain Healthcare including Community-Based Care, Specialty-Based Care, Clinical Programs, Clinical Services, Office of Patient Experience, Intermountain Medical Group, and SelectHealth. Physician shall be credentialed and privileged on the medical staff of one or more Intermountain hospital and will have a clinical practice spending approximately 80% of their time on administrative duties and 20% of their time providing clinical services.
Provides leadership and strategic medical direction of the Women and Newborns Clinical Program within Intermountain Healthcare in conjunction with the clinical program Executive Clinical Director to advance performance in each of Intermountain Healthcare’s Fundamentals of Extraordinary Care. This position will partner and collaborate with other physician leaders across the system (Medical Group, hospitals, SelectHealth) to create a professional and positive environment for providers to do their work. This position will champion provider growth and development, innovation, continuous improvement, and will be accountable to achieve system-wide women and newborn’s clinical program related goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides medical direction for all services associated with the clinical program, emphasizing safety, quality, patient experience, access, stewardship, engaged caregivers, and smart growth
- Leads and inspires a culture of success, collaboration, teamwork and dedication by all team members including physicians, APCs, nurses, technicians, and all staff members
- Leads the development and implementation of care processes and team-based care models, including use of APCs and virtual care, to support value and risk-based payment models
- Leads the physician recruitment process for the system for specialists within the clinical program, including developing annual physician recruitment plan in collaboration with planning, Community-Based Care, Specialty-Based Care, and the Medical Group
- Effectively addresses performance concerns for providers, including peer review for cases within the clinical program, in collaboration with the appropriate Community and Specialty Care CMOs
- Leads the annual strategic planning process of the clinical program in collaboration with Executive Clinical Director, ensuring that annual goals and key performance metrics are established. Ensures goals are achieved and maintains goals set by the organization.
- Recruit, train, and lead physician and subspecialty leaders in the Clinical Program, including MFM, laborists, women’s health providers and pediatric providers who attend to newborns up to 28 days of life
- Work in partnership with leadership of Obstetric/Neonatal Hospital operational lane to optimize safety and quality and reduce variation in care in hospitals across the system
- Partners with Executive Clinical Director and Intermountain Medical Group leadership to implement best practices around staffing, clinic operations, compensation, peer review, and quality improvement
- Provides overall clinical supervision to physician leaders and their teams in the development of indications/guidelines, care process models, medical staff educational materials and clinic/facility implementation tools. Approves clinical best practice.
- In collaboration with the Clinical Program Executive Clinical Director, works with Physician Leaders to serve as a consultant/resource in providing support for best practices established by development teams for implementation and adoption as usual care
- Identifies and removes barriers to system-wide standardization of equipment, supplies, and protocols; prioritizing and balancing demands on Information Systems and other “enabler” support service resources; reviewing and refining generic report sets; sharing ideas and assuring coordination between line and staff regarding clinical programs
- Supports operational effectiveness through collaboration with clinical program Executive Clinical Director, is aware of financial implications of clinical program initiatives, recommends capital expenditures for facilities and participates in medical expense budget for clinical program, partners with Medical Group operations to set budgets and optimize operating and financial performance
- Works with strategic sourcing and regional leadership to facilitate cost effective supply and equipment acquisition while assuring highest quality
- Works with Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee to achieve best practice and prices for medications
- Works in concert with Administrative Leadership to ensure regulatory and safety compliance in clinical program activities
- Leads effort in research in clinical program initiatives in collaboration with Office of Research; Evaluates most effective processes and treatments and publishes results
- Collaborates effectively with national and international partners and organizations to support and enhance Intermountain’s reputation and influence, and to augment and refine clinical program guidelines and initiatives
Experience Summary
- M.D. or D.O. with residency or fellowship training and Board Certified in a specialty or subspecialty in the areas covered by the Women and Clinical Program. Degree must be obtained through an accredited institution
- Licensed or able to be licensed to practice Medicine in the state of Utah
- Holds active privileges or qualified to be credentialed at an Intermountain Hospital and is credentialed by SelectHealth
- 10 years of progressive leadership experience in a healthcare delivery system and/or large Multi-Specialty Medical Group
- Leadership skills that set you apart. Effectively building and directing a team through challenges, growth, and innovative process improvement
